Neometals Ltd has announced that the Australian Patent Office (APO) has granted a patent to its recycling intellectual property subsidiary, ACN Co, for the key process steps of its lithium-ion battery recycling process (LiB Recycling Technology). This is the first patent to be granted out of the seventeen national patent applications filed by ACN Co for the LiB Recycling Technology in key jurisdictions worldwide. The technology, co-owned by Neometals and its joint venture partner SMS group, recovers materials from LiB production scrap and end-of-life cells that would otherwise be disposed of in landfills. The two-stage process recovers nickel, cobalt, lithium, and manganese battery materials, as well as physically recovering metals and plastics, which can then be reused in the LiB supply chain. The LiB Recycling Technology prioritizes safety, environmental sustainability, and product recoveries to support the circular economy and decarbonization.
