Eden Research PLC has announced the regulatory authorization for its biofungicide Mevalone in Germany. Mevalone is authorized for professional use on grapevines and apples to control Botrytis on grapes and for the prevention of storage diseases on apples. Germany, known for its wine production and apple cultivation, faces challenges due to fungal diseases. Mevalone's efficacy against Botrytis and its short pre-harvest interval make it a key solution for preventing these fungal attacks.
Germany, the fourth largest wine-producing country in Europe, is renowned for its white wines, particularly Riesling. The country's cooler climate is suitable for growing white grape varieties but also favorable for the development of fungal diseases. Mevalone's approval is significant in addressing these challenges. Additionally, Germany's apple-growing industry, with annual harvests of over 1.1 million tonnes, will benefit from Mevalone, which can prolong storage periods without the need for additional conventional fungicides.
Germany has the third highest registered share of all sold pesticides among EU countries. With the EU's Green Deal and Farm to Fork Strategy aiming to reduce pesticide use and increase demand for organic produce, there is a growing market drive to adopt more sustainable farming practices in Central Europe. Eden Research, in partnership with Sumi Agro Europe, aims to capture a notable portion of Germany's biopesticide market share by providing a sustainable alternative to conventional pesticides.
Sean Smith, Chief Executive Officer of Eden Research plc, expressed optimism about the regulatory approval, stating, "It is another sign of real progress for our corporate growth strategy that we are able to deliver an additional market entry opportunity for an existing product which will add meaningful revenue within three years of product launch." The company plans to work with its commercial partner, SumiAgro Germany, to optimize the commercial strategy for the region in time for the next growing season.
Eden Research PLC is the only UK-listed company focused on biopesticides for sustainable agriculture. Its products, formulated with terpene active ingredients, have been primarily used on high-value fruits and vegetables, improving crop yields and marketability. Mevalone, one of its products, is a foliar biofungicide approved for sale in key countries, with ongoing efforts to expand its global market reach.
