BP has announced the commencement of construction on its Peacock Solar project in Texas. The 187-megawatt dc solar project will be located 10 miles north of Corpus Christi in San Patricio County and will help power the Gulf Coast Growth Ventures petrochemical complex. The project is expected to come online in the second half of 2024 and will generate enough renewable energy annually to power the equivalent of 34,000 homes.
Under a long-term power purchase agreement, Peacock will sell all of the electricity it generates to Gulf Coast Growth Ventures, a joint venture between ExxonMobil and SABIC. The materials produced by GCGV are used in various industries such as clothing manufacturing, food containers, packaging, agricultural film, and construction materials.
The Peacock Solar project is expected to have a significant environmental impact, with the capacity to avoid more than 256,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions each year, equivalent to around 55,000 fuel-burning cars. Additionally, the project will create up to 300 jobs during construction and provide over $25 million in tax revenue over the first 25 years of its operation.
This project aligns with BP's commitment to supporting the global transition to lower carbon energy. By investing in renewable energy projects like Peacock Solar, BP aims to contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and promote the use of clean energy sources.
