We’ve been operating in the UK for more than a century, with deep roots in communities across the country. We were the first company to strike oil in the British sector of the North Sea in the 1970s and, more than 50 years later, we were the first company to open hubs where electric fleets can quickly charge. And there’s more to come.

To help with the country’s challenge to boost long-term energy security and cut emissions, we’re aiming to invest up to £18 billion in the UK’s energy system by 2030.

In the coming months and years, you’ll see us:

• Keeping North Sea energy flowing.

We’ll continue to invest in the North Sea to produce much-needed oil and gas while lowering emissions – and supporting thousands of jobs in the process.

Most recently, we’ve secured planning permission for a 1.25-kilometre pipeline at Sullom Voe terminal, Shetland, to help protect UK security of gas supply.

• Tripling EV charging points.

bp pulse operates one of the UK’s most-used rapid and ultra-fast EV public charging networks. Over the next 10 years, we plan to triple charging point numbers with a £1 billion investment.

We’ve recently switched on 360 bp pulse charging points as part of that investment.

And to help boost EV adoption, we’ve just teamed up with private hire cab and courier company Addison Lee to give its EV fleet enhanced access to more than 3,000 ultra-fast and rapid EV charge points across bp pulse’s public charging network.

• Developing low carbon projects in wind, solar, carbon capture and storage, and hydrogen.

In the next 10 years, we aim to have three offshore wind projects up and running, green and blue hydrogen being produced in Teesside, and some 27 million tonnes a year of carbon emissions stored safely underground. All helping to lower emissions and create thousands of jobs.

Meanwhile, Lightsource bp is about to begin construction on its largest-ever UK solar project, which, when complete, will generate enough electricity to power the equivalent of 14,230 homes.

• Helping young people gain green energy skills.

The new bp-backed Clean Energy Education Hub in Teesside, due to open next year, will specialize in clean energy and renewable industry training and career pathways for school leavers and apprentices.

Also in Teesside, we’re teaming up with STEM Learning to support students at up to 10 schools to improve their perceptions and knowledge of STEM careers.

It’s all part of a multi-million-pound programme for skills and development in the region.

Our UK head of country Louise Kingham says: “Backing Britain is about using our skills and resources to keep providing the home-grown energy security the UK needs while helping the country to achieve its net zero ambitions.”
