Balfour Beatty VINCI, the main works contractor for HS2 in the West Midlands, has completed the first of 32 giant piers for the Water Orton Viaducts. The viaducts are part of the Delta Junction, a complex network of structures that will connect HS2's Birmingham Curzon Street Station with Crewe and Manchester. The Water Orton Viaducts will be among the tallest structures along the HS2 route, taking trains over key transport corridors including the M42, the Birmingham to Peterborough rail line, and the River Tame. The piers were built using an innovative construction method and eco-friendly concrete alternative, reducing carbon use by more than 60%. The viaduct spans will be built using a match-casting technique, creating a seamless viaduct deck when installed. Once completed, the area underneath the viaduct will be landscaped to provide a connected and accessible area with tree planting, new wildlife habitats, footpaths, and cycle routes.
