Balfour Beatty has initiated the construction of the West Slope Residences, a new student accommodation project for The University of Sussex. The project, which has achieved Financial Close, will see Balfour Beatty Investments investing £32 million in equity, with the University of Sussex contributing the remaining 19%. The development will provide 1,899 bedrooms, a Health and Wellbeing Centre, and catering and retail facilities for students. Balfour Beatty will utilize modular construction techniques to reduce carbon emissions during construction. Upon completion, Balfour Beatty Investments will maintain the accommodation for 54 years.

Ion Appuhamy, Managing Director of Balfour Beatty Investments, expressed excitement about the project, highlighting its significance in enhancing the student experience. Lindsay McGibbon, Managing Director of Balfour Beatty's regional buildings business, emphasized the company's extensive experience in delivering student accommodation schemes. Allan Spencer, Executive Director at the University of Sussex, hailed the project as a critical investment that will enhance the university's Capital Programme and the overall student and staff experience.

Balfour Beatty, with a strong track record in the student accommodation market, is already working on the construction, aiming for completion by the 2026/27 academic year. The project is expected to create employment for 450 people, including approximately 50 apprentice and graduate roles, aligning with the company's commitment to The 5% Club. This initiative is part of Balfour Beatty's comprehensive offering, covering development, design, financing, construction, and maintenance of student accommodations.
