Balfour Beatty has been appointed to deliver two coastal defence schemes in Norfolk, UK, with a combined value of £19.5 million. The schemes, awarded by North Norfolk District Council through the SCAPE Civil Engineering framework, aim to protect 600 local homes and businesses from flooding and coastal erosion. The Cromer Phase 2 Scheme will involve the construction of a new rock armour revetment on the Norfolk coast, while the Mundesley Coastal Management Scheme will include placing rock on the shoreline, refurbishing groynes, and completing remedial works to existing sea walls. The projects are expected to be completed by early 2025.
As part of its commitment to sustainability, Balfour Beatty plans to divert 95% of waste from landfill by recycling materials and donating excess timber to community projects and charities. Peter Mumford, Managing Director of Balfour Beatty's UK Construction Regional Civils business, stated that the company has a wealth of experience in delivering coastal protection and flood defence schemes and is dedicated to providing much-needed protection for the communities in Cromer and Mundesley.
Mark Robinson, SCAPE Group Chief Executive, emphasized the importance of protecting communities, homes, and businesses from flooding. He highlighted that the two schemes will help safeguard Cromer and Mundesley and future-proof their defences against extreme weather. The use of the SCAPE Civil Engineering framework will enable North Norfolk District Council to maximize the speed and efficiency of delivery and create a positive, sustainable legacy.
Works on both schemes are set to commence this winter, employing a workforce of around 50 people, including apprenticeship, graduate, and trainee positions.
