Balfour Beatty has been awarded a £185 million contract by Transport Scotland to dual the A9 between Tomatin and Moy in the Scottish Highlands. The project includes upgrading 9.6 kilometers of single carriageway to dual carriageway, constructing four major bridges, delivering new side roads, and providing over 10 kilometers of improved active travel routes to promote cycling and walking in the local area. This initiative is expected to improve road safety, journey times, and reliability for all road users, including pedestrians, cyclists, and bus passengers.
The A9 Dualling: Tomatin to Moy project is part of Transport Scotland's multi-billion pound A9 Dualling Programme and is aimed at generating economic growth, supporting businesses, communities, and tourism throughout Scotland. Balfour Beatty is committed to reducing carbon emissions during the construction phase by sourcing local materials and utilizing industry-leading digital delivery techniques such as 4D planning to optimize construction sequencing and drive efficiencies and productivity.
Hector MacAulay MBE, Managing Director of Balfour Beatty's regional business in Scotland, expressed the company's commitment to delivering far-reaching benefits to the Scottish economy, creating hundreds of new jobs, and stimulating growth of business communities, especially in the tourism industry. At construction peak, the project is expected to employ 180 people, including eight graduate and apprenticeship positions as part of Balfour Beatty's commitment to The 5% Club and Transport Scotland's A9 Dualling Social Value Programme.
This project marks the third section of the A9 Dualling Programme to begin construction and is expected to have a positive impact on the local economy and community. Balfour Beatty's dedication to sustainability and inclusive economic growth is evident in their award-winning sustainable projects, demonstrating their commitment to supporting Scotland's transition towards net zero in the built environment.
