Balfour Beatty has been featured in New Civil Engineer alongside SSEN Transmission, discussing their work as part of the Accelerated Strategic Transmission Investment (ASTI) framework. This framework involves a significant investment of over £10 billion to upgrade the electricity transmission network infrastructure throughout northern Scotland by 2030. Balfour Beatty has commenced work on the development of nine of these Electricity Transmission schemes, providing expertise to support SSEN Transmission in identifying and resolving potential construction challenges, streamlining the planning process, advising on the best use of materials, planning the phasing of work, and scoping out the use of modern construction methods.
Gordon Dinning, Balfour Beatty's Head of Business Development and Preconstruction for Scotland, highlighted the benefits of early contractor involvement, stating, "The benefit with early contractor involvement is you get constructability built in... SSEN [Transmission] was wise enough to know that it had to get the contractors on board early, especially with the volume of work across the piece."
Balfour Beatty's Power Transmission & Distribution teams work with regional, national, and international electricity network owners and operators to provide technical engineering solutions across the full spectrum of the electricity grid, including overhead lines, cabling, substations, and distribution networks. The company's involvement in significant projects such as Hinkley Point C, the Lyric Theatre in Hong Kong, and the Automated People Mover superstructure at Los Angeles International Airport demonstrates its commitment to delivering critical infrastructure projects globally.
