Balfour Beatty has initiated work with SSEN Transmission on nine Electricity Transmission projects in the north of Scotland. These projects are part of SSEN Transmission's 'Pathway to 2030' network redevelopment program, to which Balfour Beatty was appointed in August 2023. The initial phase of works includes providing technical solutions for new overhead lines, substation construction, and upgrades to existing lines. Balfour Beatty will offer expertise to identify and resolve construction challenges, streamline planning, advise on material use, and plan work phasing for optimal productivity.

Moreover, the company will strategically map the talent required for the projects, investing in capability and expertise, and providing long-term career opportunities, including Apprenticeship and Graduate roles. This collaboration marks the first step in delivering the onshore transmission infrastructure needed for SSEN Transmission's 'Pathway to 2030' program, contributing to securing future energy independence by enabling the connection and transportation of affordable, homegrown, low carbon power.

Steve Tarr, Balfour Beatty's Chief Executive Officer of Transport, Energy, and Power Major Projects, expressed excitement about the collaboration, emphasizing the company's role in realizing the UK and Scottish Government's renewable energy targets. Tony Scott, Director of Capital Development and Delivery at SSEN Transmission, highlighted the invaluable knowledge and experience Balfour Beatty will bring to deliver critical national infrastructure for achieving net zero.

The Early Contractor Involvement phase, involving over 100 people from Balfour Beatty, is currently underway, with main construction expected to commence in 2026 and energization of all nine projects anticipated by 2030. Construction contracts for these projects are expected to be awarded from the end of 2025 into 2026.
