Anglo Asian Mining plc has provided an update on the final Micon report, which was delivered to the company and the Government of Azerbaijan. The report was commissioned to undertake a Health, Safety and Environmental due diligence review of the tailings management at Gedabek gold mine. The review included soil and water sampling, as well as testing air quality in the vicinity of Gedabek. The main findings of the report include that radiation levels at Gedabek are aligned with natural background conditions, noise levels were low and within acceptable limits, and no issues of concern were identified with air quality. The report also found that no cyanide was found in any soil sample above the limits of analytical detection, and very low concentrations of cyanide were found in four water samples, which were within the guidelines of the International Finance Corporation. The report concluded that opposition to the proposed new tailings storage facility is the result of a lack of proactive communication between the site management team and the local community, longstanding issues regarding land allocation and mineral rights, and the failure to follow accepted international protocols for public consultation. The report also highlighted various examples of good practice at the Gedabek site, but also identified areas for improvement, including the emergency response capability, environmental monitoring and documentation, and community relations. The company is now considering the findings of the report and is in active dialogue with the government and local communities to implement the recommendations. Further updates will be provided in due course.
